The EU Multistakeholder Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR EMS Forum), chaired by the European Commission, met at plenary level on 19th December 2002.

The main organisations of the European business, trade unions and civil society, as well as EU and international institutions, were represented (see list of participants).

Representatives from organisations which do not participate in the Co-ordination Committee of the CSR Forum, stressed the importance of an efficient and timely preparation of the Forum meetings, in particular information and consultation on the agenda and documentation of the Roundtables. The Commission agreed to work in a transparent and open way and to send relevant documents simultaneoulsy to all CSR Forum member and observer organisations.

Endorsement of the Work Programme of the CSR EMS Forum

The Forum endorsed its Work Programme.

Subthemes to be addressed by Forum Round Tables

Members of the CSR Forum discussed indicative lists of subthemes for the Round Tables.

The importance of addressing crosscutting issues such as environmental protection and gender was stressed during the discussion.

It was decided to attach previously requested indicative lists of subthemes as an annex to the workprogramme of the Forum.

In conclusion, the chair underlined the general consensus on the importance of the following subthemes.

RT "Improving knowledge about CSR and facilitating the exchange of experience and good practice"

  • Impact of CSR on business
  • Processes, incentives & tools to stimulate dissemination of knowledge, innovation, uptake of CSR
  • Integration of CSR in business strategies, structures & processes
  • Integration of CSR in education & training

RT "Fostering CSR among SMEs"

  • CSR business case for SME
  • Awareness raising, dissemination of good practices, incentives for SME further uptake of CSR
  • Co-operation between large & SME

RT "Diversity, convergence and transparency of CSR practices and tools"

  • Credibility and transparency of CSR practices and tools (codes of conduct, management systems, reporting, labelling, SRI)
  • Diversity versus convergence

RT "CSR Development aspects"

  • CSR and globalisation
  • Ethical and Fair trade
  • Poverty alleviation
  • Financial Transparency
