SEP Coverage (15-02-2011)

Progress made in 2010

The Single Entry Point (SEP) coverage indicators for the year 2010 have been published in the February issue of the Data Transmission Courier (DTC). The overall EU27 score is up by 4 percent from previous year (77% -> 81%), but there are indications that common efforts are needed by data preparers and senders as well as Eurostat domain managers in order to achieve further improvement.

EDAMIS Lunchtime presentation (04-02-2011)

What's there? What's coming? - two sessions at Eurostat with high attendance

The presentation covered the recent developments in EDAMIS: WebForms, Validation, as well as features in the upcoming release: improved routing, feedback transmission, mixed periodicity. The slides are available here.

EDAMIS Web Portal (18-01-2011)

The 3.1 version of the portal was successfully installed on 17th January

The main points of interest from the Release Notes are the following.

eDAMIS Web Portal (15-10-2010)

Unexpected proxy authentication from eWP data senders

During summer several data senders using the Send Datafile form in the eDAMIS Web Portal reported an issue about an unexpected proxy authentication box appearing when performing transfers (Figure 1). This happens in Advance Upload Form when the Java applet performing the transfer starts running. The issue is blocking because whatever is entered in the proxy authentication box, the authentication fails and the transfer stops.
The issue appeared suddenly for some data senders and is suspected to be caused by a bug in the new versions 1.6.xx of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Figure 1: The unexpected authentication box
Figure 1 : The unexpected authentication box

Beside the unexpected proxy authentication box, the content of the Java console shows a Java error:

------ start isAuthProxiedServiceClient ------
java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException: Error constructing implementation (algorithm: Default, provider: SunJSSE, class: com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.DefaultSSLContextImpl)
------ end isAuthProxiedServiceClient ------

The solution to this problem is following.

Each user has a folder in the local file system where the local settings are stored. Depending on the operating system the folder can be "C:\Users\<userid>" or "C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>" where "<userid>" is the user id used to log into the PC. For example, if the user logs into his PC by entering "myfirstname.mylastname", the local settings would be stored under "C:\Users\ myfirstname.mylastname" or "C:\Documents and Settings\ myfirstname.mylastname".
This folder contains a sub-folder “edamis” which stores the eDAMIS web portal certificate in a file called “cacerts” (Figure 2).

Figure 2: The "cacert" file
Figure 2 : the "cacert' file

For an unknown reason, the “cacerts” file becomes empty (file size = 0 kb) instead of containing the certificate. When the user tries to perform a transfer he gets the unexpected proxy authentication box.
The solution is to delete the “cacerts” file. The deletion is possible only if there is no active session to the eWP. It is thus recommended to close all web browsers before deleting the file. The file is automatically and correctly recreated when the the user logs into the eWP again and goes to the Send Datafile form.

eWA 2.9.8. - TCO loses password when other users' rights are updated

In eWA 2.9.8, a user with TCO role encounters connection difficulties when another user receives new rights in the portal.
The reception of SRR by the eWA installation deletes the password of all the TCO users. If a TCO enters a password in the "log in" screen, he receives a warning message about "incorrect password and/or user’s login". He has to log in eWA without entering a password and to redefine his password in the "User management" form, which is displayed automatically.
Other users do not have this problem.

This problem can be solved by installing the latest eWA version.

New Java security message

Some users have reported the occurrence of this warning:

Java Security Message

This message appears in Java since version 1.6.0_19. Our development team is investigating how the working of new Java security messages can be made more transparent to everybody.

For the time being, please advise your users to click NO on this special warning. If they click "Yes" the eDAMIS applets will be partly blocked and sending files or opening web forms might not work properly.

Settings for specific versions of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

The default configuration of JRE 1.6.0_19 and 1.6.0_20 might cause the java applets for WebForms and Send Datafile not running properly.

For the time being, two solutions are possible:

- to install the new JRE 1.6.0_21, or

- to change the settings by going to [Start]->[Control Panel]->[Java] and then in the tab [Advanced] uncheck the option under [Java Plug-in].

Disable the next generation java plug-in

Additionally, in order to improve handling of java-related problems, it is recommended to enable the Java console, as shows in the previous image. In case of problem the contents of the Java console can be sent to eDAMIS Support.

Proxy authentication for Eurostat users

Certain users at Eurostat reported that in the new JRE java applets require the proxy login credentials to be typed several times. This is both inconvenient for the users and error prone.

It has been found that the proxy settings for java should be modified by going to [Start]->[Control Panel]->[Java] and then on the [General] tab to [Network Settings]. In the window which appears enable the [Use proxy server] and select [Bypass proxy...], without specifying any address, port or advanced settings, as shown on the next picture.

Use proxy server, bypass it for locals addresses

Our development team is currently working on better solutions to the above mentioned problems.

eWA 2.9.9 in production

Version 2.9.9 of eDAMIS Web Application (eWA) has been in production since 28 April. The installation files can be download from the EDAMIS Help Centre.

We would like to suppress the eWA 2.3.x from supported versions (only 3 installations are still active). By running a recent version, not only will you benefit from the latest functional changes and corrections but you help in maintaining a good level of support by reducing our workload.
